Chapter 8

It was a cold New Year’s Eve, and even though there wasn’t any snow on the ground, the temperature had dropped low enough to put a chill in one’s bones. The sun was just beginning to settle and everyone was getting ready for their nightly activities. In many homes, people celebrated the only way they could; with lots of drinks and food. Malik’s parents were no different. Roberta had invited a few of their close friends over to play cards, kick back and watch the ball drop. Everyone was having fun; that is everyone except Calvin. He was tired of running around and doing everything that Roberta ordered him to do. His back and hips were aching, and she didn’t seem to care as she put him to work on things all around the house. Calvin wanted so bad to speak up and say something about her behavior, but he knew that things would turn ugly if he did.

Across town, Malik sat in the driver seat of a 1981 Buick Grand National. He and Justin bobbed their heads to the sound of “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang, as he whipped the vehicle in and out of traffic. After getting caught at the stop light, they both sang along to the song, taking turns with each verse. Their fun halted when a police cruiser pulled alongside them and stopped as well. As quickly as he could, Justin reached out and turned the volume of the radio all the way down until nothing more could be heard. Worried, both boys stared straight ahead, pretending to be focused on the road as if something exciting was happening before them. A horn blared and neither boy made a move. When it sounded a second time, Malik turned his head, ever so slightly, and saw that it was the cop that was beeping.

Scared out of his mind, he whispered to Justin.

“He’s beeping at us.”

“What?” Justin asked alarmed.

“The cop…he’s beeping at us,” Malik repeated.

“What the fuck!” Justin breathed. “You gotta get ghost on his ass!” Justin wanted Malik to hit the gas and take the cop on a high-speed chase. Going to jail wasn’t what Justin had on his list of plans to do when he left the house that morning.

“Hell, naw, I ain’t doing that shit. I’m just about to see what he wants,” Malik told Justin, rolling down the window against his friend’s wishes. “Yes, sir?” he asked the officer.

“That’s a mighty fine vehicle you got there young man,” the police officer said, gawking at the custom paint job on the vehicle. It was a nice car—too nice for a pair of teenagers to be driving in.

“Yes, sir, it’s my daddy’s car,” Malik flashed him a smile. “I’m running to the store to get more snacks for the New Year’s party he and my mom are throwing tonight,” he lied, never missing a beat.

“Oh, okay…you be careful out here. These crazy folk gone be out here shooting soon; so get what you need and head right back on home.
